Welcome to the

Echuca Fire Brigade

WHO ARE WE?

Echuca Fire Brigade is a 100% volunteer brigade, serving the Echuca community and surrounding districts since 1872. We attend more than 250 calls for assistance each year including house and factory fires, grass and scrub fires, motor vehicle accidents and a range of other incidents. More than 60 members provide a volunteer and community based fire and emergency service 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Our membership is made up of a diverse group of people, with both male and female members between the ages of 16 and 90. Our members come to us with a variety of different backgrounds and skills.

The brigade has approximately 40 operational firefighters who attend the varied fires and incidents throughout the year, but just as importantly we have around 20 non operational members who provide the support and logistics our firefighters need.

Supporting our community to be ready and resilient as we respond to today’s emergencies is an integral part of the brigade’s focus. We have a team that is focused on community engagement and education.

How to get involved

Echuca Fire Brigade attends more than 250 calls for emergency assistance each year. We are proud of the high standards we set and meet for our community.

Training is at the forefront of everything we do as firefighters. We train weekly on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings to keep our skills finely tuned. We have minimum attendance rates for our members to attend training and call outs to ensure consistent performance at every emergency call out.

Firefighters should either live or work close enough to the local fire station to be able get to the brigade in a timely manner. Firefighting can involve strenuous and physically challenging activities, so a certain level of fitness is required to undertake this role. All brigade members are required to undergo a police check and medical check when applying to join – we’ll help you to arrange this.

People from all walks of life become CFA volunteers including young people, women of all ages, active retirees and people from culturally diverse communities. Compulsory "minimum skills" training for firefighters can take up to 4 months and no fires can be attended until this training is completed.

In this initial training you will learn all the basic skills and safety requirements to be able to commence attending incidents. Volunteering as firefighter is a challenging role, but one which is hugely satisfying. The feeling of serving your community is very rewarding. You don’t need to have experience to join the brigade.

Junior Brigade

Echuca Junior Fire Brigade is led by a designated Junior Leader - an operational firefighter with the brigade who has undertaken additional training qualifying them to run the Junior program. The Junior Leader is assisted by other senior firefighters.

Juniors firefighters participate in many activities such as practical firefighting drills, map reading, radio use, first aid training as well as fire brigade competitions and championships. All of these activities are designed to prepare the junior firefighters for not just life as a senior firefighter but also lifetime skills.

Juniors train on Wednesday nights (except on school and public holidays) at the Echuca Fire Station, from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm. To join, you must be aged between 11-15 years of age and have a parent or guardian’s permission. There is no cost for your child to be part of this program and all juniors will be provided with the appropriate clothing and uniforms to be part of the brigade.

Over the summer period we also have a running team that trains and competes in fire brigade competitions against other brigades from local area and across the state. This teaches the kids some great skills, teamwork and helps them with their fitness.
